Science at the service of the oceans

500 students were expected at Llano College for the 2024 Science Festival. For one day, classrooms were transformed into laboratories, with the theme: Ocean. The students did not lack resources, but they knew how to highlight new technologies.

Science was in the spotlight Thursday, Oct. 3, at Llano Middle School as budding botanists gathered to present their projects to other students. This year's ocean-themed Science Festival is an opportunity to reflect on the marine ecosystem that surrounds Wallis. The first observation among students is that it should be taken care of because its harmful effects have already appeared.

When we see that coral is white, this means that it is polluted by sunscreen or waste, and when we see that it is colored and brown, this means that it is not polluted.

Visible pollution on the reef But the Science Festival is an opportunity to present tangible scientific and technological solutions made by the young residents of Wallis. Coral reefs are fragile, and we need to find a way to grow them but also to monitor the water temperature in real time using connected sensors. “It involves taking marine measurements such as pH, temperature or salinity, and we can place them where the corals are.”

The innovations don't stop there in celebrating science. And in new technologies, virtual reality headsets, and artificial intelligence continue to serve the oceans.

We trained the AI to recognize fish and garbage by giving it several pictures of fish and garbage.

The game, powered by artificial intelligence, may seem trivial, but by distinguishing between fish and waste, the machine can contribute, for example, to cleaning the oceans. Innovations that contributed to the success of this science festival and to educating young people about the fragility of the oceans. Reporting by Louis Metivier and Patita Savea.
