Google's file sharing feature, similar to AirDrop, now works at the same speed whether you're connected to the same Wi-Fi network or not.
In February, Google and Samsung formalized the merger of their file sharing solutions to offer just one solution: Quick Share.
This lets you share files with nearby devices with just a few clicks, like AirDrop on the Apple ecosystem.
Although Quick Share worked very well between a smartphone and a Windows PC, the tool suffered from poor performance when the two devices were not connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Rapid participation in all circumstances
Until now, to benefit from optimal transfer speeds between your devices, it was necessary to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If not, the Quick Share feature is back to the Bluetooth connection which was necessary to activate in all cases.
According to Mishal Rahman from specialized media Robot bodyPerformance is now identical whether the devices are connected to the same network or not. According to the specialist's findings, it is enough to activate the Wi-Fi connection, without even having to connect to a specific network.
We were able to test it between the Pixel 8a and a Windows 11 24H2 PC, and the transfer speed was the same whether we were connected to Wi-Fi or not (about 10-12MB/s).
Google has not announced a potential update to the app. It's likely to use direct Wi-Fi in particular, even if the technology is clearly not yet supported in its Windows version, according to Rahman.
In any case, this improvement will greatly facilitate file sharing between Android smartphones and computers.
