This unique event highlights Weiss's exploration of Portuguese culture and Pessoa's deep literary heritage.
Described as an original and enchanting musical tapestry, the collaboration features 11 poems by Fernando Pessoa, composed by Weiss, with contributions from Grammy Award-winner Terry Britten and Portuguese jazz artist Carlos Barreto. “Soul Whisper” is inspired by the life of Pessoa, and traces his journey from South Africa to the Alfama district of Lisbon.
Weiss, who has worked with music legends such as Michael Bublé and Bobby McFerrin, found new inspiration in Pessoa's writing, saying it changed his perspective on life. The show will combine jazz, folk, Americana and traditional Portuguese sounds, creating a captivating backdrop to her sound.
“Soul Whisper” was first performed in Portugal and then in Canada Pizza Express Sohowith Pedro Velasco Trio and special guest Julian Joseph (OBE). Actor Luis Felipe Eusebio will narrate the project's story and recite some poems in Portuguese.
As she performs her music at the London Jazz Festival on November 17, Weiss is grateful for the support she has received, including from Pessoa's nephew, Luis Miguel Rosa Dias, who is now deceased. She hopes that the audience will leave with a deeper connection to Portuguese culture and the exceptional poet Fernando Pessoa.
