The authorities of the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia, announced, Thursday, the targeting of a power plant there during the night with a drone attack, which did not cause serious damage.
“Last night there was an aerial drone attack on the Balaklava Thermal Power Plant,” Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razugayev said on Telegram. The transformer suffered minor damage. “There were no injuries,” he added.
Mr. Razugaev explained that “there is no danger to the electricity supply” and that “the accident does not affect the electricity supply in Sevastopol and the peninsula”.
He pointed out that the station’s transformer, which caught fire, “was under maintenance and not working,” adding that “the station’s workers were able to deal with the fire quickly.”
His statement comes as Ukraine continues its counter-offensive in the south of the country.
Russian forces have intensified their strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in recent weeks.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and Kyiv aims to reconquer it.
