Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov visited the front line in the Donbass region last week, a senior Pentagon official said Monday, which is Moscow’s priority target in eastern Ukraine.
“What we can confirm is that we know that he was in the Donbass for several days last week.”Director said. “We do not believe he is still there. We believe he has left and returned to Russia. We cannot confirm reports that he has been injured.”he added.
An adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Anton Gerichenko said on Sunday that several Russian officers were wounded in an attack ” Explosion ” in Izyum in eastern Ukraine, adding that Valery Gerasimov was there.
Another adviser to the Interior Ministry, Viktor Androsev, confirmed to Ukrainian television that Gerasimov was unharmed. “We have confirmation that he was there, in the area of Izium (…). We have confirmed confirmation that he was not injured.”He said.
It is said that Valery Gerasimov may lose the front to better understand conditions on the ground, as Russian forces, having failed to capture Kyiv, are trying to take control of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
The Pentagon official also said that Russian forces were making limited progress in their battle against the Ukrainians in the region. According to him, the Russians, for example, took control of the villages and then lost them to the Ukrainian fighters. He claimed that the Russian army was demoralized and suffered from a disorganized leadership.
