More than two decades after the attacks of September 11, 2001, a new victim has been identified using new DNA sequencing technology.
Authorities were able to identify the 1,650th victim of the attacks as John Ballantyne Niven, a 44-year-old man from Oyster Bay, New York, USA TODAY reports.
He was vice president of the insurance company Aon Risk Services, whose offices are located on the 105th floor of the second tower of the World Trade Center, the New York Times reported.
“Although the pain of the devastating loss of September 11 is still there, the possibility of new identities can provide comfort to the families of the victims,” says New York Mayor Eric Adams.
About 40% of the approximately 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks have not yet been identified.
DNA tests are still being conducted to try to identify these victims.
New sequencing technology has allowed authorities to achieve tangible results in recent years, after many failed attempts.
These efforts continue in the case of the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as in the case of more than 20,000 other people who died in the United States and have not yet been identified.
