A merging of images from eight telescopes
If it takes a lot of time For the image published this week, it is on one hand because the so-called “portrait” is actually a combination of images taken by eight separate telescopes around the world.
This is amazing collaborative project It brings together 350 scientists called the Event Horizon Telescope.
But the image of another black hole was also a fusion of several telescopes. However, this presented, in addition, great difficulty. Being 1,000 times smaller, it changes its appearance more quickly: every five minutes, the researchers estimate.
The pictures were taken for a week, so it was necessary to get a final result that literally removes blur, filling in empty spaces.
Coming soon a movie about the changes of the black hole
But the next step, mentioned Thursdayno less than a movie, to show these changes over time.
By making use of 4,000 terabytes of information collected in 2017 – another absolute – and possibly other observations since then, in 2021 and 2022. The movie won’t tell the experts anything else, but we can expect “oh” and ” Ah” other than admiration.
