The 10th Political Dialogue between the State of Madagascar and the European Union took place on Monday (August 8th) at the State Palace in Iavoloha Antananarivo.
The meeting, which was chaired by President Andry Rajoelina, was attended by Prime Minister Christian Ntsai, ministers and senior government officials from the Malagasy side. Moreover, the European side represented Giovanni Di Girolamo, EU Ambassador to Madagascar, and Chargé d’Affairs from Germany and France.
The ambassadors of Spain, Portugal and Finland, representatives of Belgium, the Czech Republic and Italy participated in the meeting via video link.
The political aspect related to the upcoming Malagasy presidential session scheduled for 2023 was discussed during this dialogue. The European side referred to the Independent Electoral Observation Mission, which arrived in Madagascar last May to assess the implementation of the recommendations contained in the final report of the Electoral Observation Mission for 2018.
Thus, the EU has placed great emphasis on the importance of an inclusive, consensual and transparent electoral process.
For his part, President Andry Rajoelina stressed in his speech that “Madagascar is not a country in crisis (…). The country needs stability to move forward calmly to recover from the shock of recent crises.
In addition to politics, many areas of cooperation between Madagascar and the European Union were discussed, such as programs and projects funded under the eleventh EDF (European Development Fund), those to be implemented under the new EU cooperation instrument, NDISI-Global Europe, as well as the Association Agreement Temporary Economic and Fishing Agreement.
A political dialogue is held annually between the Malagasy authorities and the European Union in a spirit of partnership, in accordance with Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement on Cooperation between the European Union and the Organization of Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
