The history and heritage of the Portuguese White Fleet are celebrated in a new musical by Pamela Morgan.
The White Fleet Suite draws on Morgan's strong memories of the cultural influence of Portuguese sailors who were common on the St. John's waterfront in times past.
She remembers arriving in St. John's from Grand Falls as a young girl and being “absolutely fascinated” by the waterfront activity. “It was an international flavor and I've never forgotten it.” She says there are many cultural similarities between Newfoundland and Portugal and she wanted to celebrate them.
She drew inspiration from cultural and musical traditions on both sides of the Atlantic, with the help of a good Portuguese friend and others, including Duane Andrews, the musical director.
Also participating in this concert are the Atlantic Quartet, Aaron Collis, Frank Fusari, Bill Brennan, and three musical guests from Portugal: Zizi Vinandez, Uría Gomez and Teófilo Siqueira. She says they also have beautiful ones Video archive Since the days when the White Fleet dominated the St. John's waterfront.
The show will be held on November 3 and 4 at St. John's Arts and Culture Centre.
