The new year began on Monday with a 4.1-magnitude earthquake in the Los Angeles area of California, the USGS announced, with no casualties or damage reported so far.
An AFP photographer felt a “very mild” earthquake early in the morning in Culver City, Los Angeles County, which was enough to wake him up to the tremors.
Another also noted that a “small” earthquake occurred in Lawndale, which is closer to the epicenter and is located in the Pacific Ocean according to the USGS.
The quake occurred 12 miles off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, which is about 50 miles from Los Angeles, according to the US Geological Survey.
In December 2022, at least two people died in Northern California after a strong earthquake off the American coast, causing landslides and cutting off electricity to tens of thousands of people.
This state, located in Western America, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. According to seismologists, an earthquake capable of causing widespread devastation – the famous “big earthquake” – will almost certainly hit California in the coming decades.
The new year also began with earthquakes in Japan, where strong earthquakes caused significant damage.
