And in a vote at the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly since Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York, 140 countries voted for it, 38 countries abstained, and five countries voted against it.

And I heard a few rounds of applause in the General Assembly grandstand.

But it is not commensurate with the reception of the first resolution adopted by this Assembly on 2 March.

On that day, in a vote that the General Assembly described as “historic,” 141 countries approved the first non-binding text “demanding that Russia immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine.” Five countries voted against it, including Russia, and 35 countries abstained.

So on Thursday the General Assembly adopted this text presented by Ukraine and initially prepared for weeks by France and Mexico, but also voted on a competing text submitted by South Africa.

The resolution, which did not mention Russia at all, received 50 votes to 67 against, with 36 abstentions.

So it is not approved.

On the contrary, the text discussed since Wednesday morning and finally adopted “demands the Russian Federation an immediate cessation of hostilities against Ukraine, in particular all attacks against civilians and civilian objects.”

The resolution “reiterates United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for Russia to stop its military offensive, as well as his call for a ceasefire and the resumption of the course of dialogue and negotiations.”
