According to the head of Portuguese diplomacy, this visit comes within the framework of strengthening friendly relations between the peoples of Burkina Faso and Portugal.

The host explained that the European Union, whose country has joined its membership, is ready to assist Burkina in its search for security and development solutions.

In 2001 Portugal decided to strengthen its bilateral cooperation with Burkina Faso, which led in February 2002 to the signing of a framework agreement, following the visit of the Portuguese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to Burkina Faso. Thus a Mixed Cooperation Commission was set up between Lusso and Burkina Faso, whose task is to study means of strengthening cooperation in areas of interest.
On February 25, 2009, the Council of Ministers adopted decrees opening a consulate and appointing Helder Battaglia dos Santos to the post of Honorary Consul of Burkina Faso in Lisbon (Portugal).
