(Ottawa) Canada imposes sanctions on Alina Kabaeva, believed to be the wife of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The former Olympic gymnast is among 22 close associates of the Russian regime added to Ottawa’s sanctions list following the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s forces.
The UK had already imposed sanctions on MI Kabaeva earlier this month, was also named in a draft list of people the European Union could target.
At the time, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie did not rule out a similar move, saying that Canada wanted to be on par with its allies when it came to imposing sanctions on those associated with President Putin.

The latest round of sanctions, which also include four financial institutions, went into effect last Friday. Canada has so far imposed sanctions on more than 1,500 individuals and entities since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
In response to a question Tuesday about the true effectiveness of these sanctions, Minister Jolie stressed that there was “frustration on the part of many people in the business community” in Russia.
