Thierry Henry gave his version, “I never got in touch with the federation”

On Sunday, the Portuguese Football Association announced that Roberto Martinez had taken over as coach of the Portugal national team. Therefore, the former Belgium coach left his position vacant after the Red Devils were eliminated in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. On the Belgian side, the Spaniard’s official replacement on the bench has yet to be announced. On the other hand, Thierry Henry has been named among the candidates to take the helm of the Belgian team.

Some media outlets even claimed that the former tri-colour international has submitted his candidacy to the Belgian Federation. It is true that the information makes sense: Thierry Henry was one of Roberto Martinez’s assistants. But this Tuesday, the second top scorer in the history of the French national team denied his contact with the federation: “I want to make it clear that, contrary to what is written, I have not approached the Belgian Football Association to offer my services as technical director. I think it is important to present the true version of the facts.”

When their former – now – coach departed, Belgium put out a call for candidates. According to Belgian media La Libre, two people came forward. The first will be Andrea Pirlo and the second will be Hervé Renard. The latter performed well in the World Cup with the Saudi national team, the only team that defeated Argentina.
