These three stories were born from the ruins of the Portuguese Empire, their shimmering fabric riddled with holes. Forgetting is simultaneously the troubled memory of the central characters, the marginality in which they navigate, and the hidden legacies of colonialism and slavery. Gemilia Pereira de Almeida was born in Angola, raised in Portugal, and lives in the United States: her vision is comprehensive. In each of these tales, she modifies the point of view, the period, and the language as well, and is always rich in poetic imagery, but in different registers.
An epic with Celestino, an old pirate, slave trader, returned to his abandoned hometown. He brags about his crimes and adds horror to them, but he is haunted by memories of the most heinous crimes. An assassin who loves plants, indifferent to the gardener but responsive to his care. This foolish old man knows how to make the garden a paradise, and his diary tells of this passion. Friendly with children, accompanied by his ghosts, he enters death in peace.
