To retrieve her cell phone: A young woman got stuck head first in a crack for seven hours

A woman in her 20s found herself stuck upside down in a crack for seven hours while trying to retrieve her mobile phone, forcing emergency services to use her imagination to free her from her bad position.

“In my ten years as a rescue paramedic, I have never encountered a job like this. It was a challenge, however [le résultat a été] Incredibly rewarding. […] “We all worked very well together,” Peter Watts of the New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance Service said on Facebook.

Last week, Matilda Campbell, 23, was with a group of friends in an area with no cell service when she allegedly dropped her cell phone between two rocks in New South Wales, Australia, Tuesday.

Except that while trying to retrieve it, she then slipped into a three-metre-long crack, and found herself stuck upside down. Her friends then tried to get her out of her predicament for an hour, before she relied on emergency services, unable to find any other way to free her.

The NSW Ambulance Service reportedly worked with a multidisciplinary team to remove several large rocks, using a wooden frame, to create a safe and stable access point to reach the little girl.

“Both feet are accessible now […] It took teamwork and a specialized crane to move a massive 500kg boulder,” we read on Facebook.

After getting stuck in a tight S-shaped curve, the patient was finally freed from the incision after seven hours of labor. She only survived with minor scratches and bruises, according to the ambulance service.

The young woman said on Facebook that she was “forever grateful” to her friends and her rescue team, “without whom she might not be here today,” The Guardian reported.

“It's safe to say I'm the most accident prone person. I'm fine, I just have a few injuries I'm recovering from. No more rock exploring for me for a while!” she added in a second post.

Ironically, after all this, the patient was unable to retrieve her cell phone, the NSW Ambulance Service said.
