Figueiredo wore the leader’s jersey after winning the fifth stage of the Tour of Portugal, his only stage success in the Portuguese race. He stripped fellow Uruguayan Mauricio Moreira of the yellow jacket he wore after winning the third stage behind another Glassdrive Q8 Anicolor rider, Rafael Reyes, who took the lead.
Reese set the beta benchmark for the first time on Monday (26:22). Then it was raised by the main players in the general classification: Spaniards Asier Exteberria (26:20), Txomin Jauristi (26:15), Alejandro Marche (26:12). Portugal’s Antonio Carvalho then took control (25:28) before facing Uruguayan Mauricio Moreira, who finished second before the trial, 7 seconds behind Figueiredo. Moreira made everyone give up by completing 18.65 kilometers in 25:07. At the same time, Figueiredo took advantage of his yellow jersey for the last time: the Portuguese, who was less comfortable than his main opponents in the given exercise, settled on seventh place at 1:16 of Moreira. Thus, the latter won the final classification for the Portugal round with a time of 1:09 and 2:35, ahead of fellow Portuguese Frederico Figueiredo and Antonio Carvalho.
Behind Moreira, who finished second in Portugal in 2021, is the Portuguese Amaro Antunes, who beat him last year by ten seconds. This is Uruguay’s first win in the Portugal Tour.
