Toyota recalls 102,000 Tundra and Lexus LX 600 vehicles

• Toyota is recalling 102,000 Tundra and Lexus LX 600 vehicles due to debris in some engines.

Toyota is known for its reliability, but in recent years, its record has not been as stellar as it once was. This week, the company issued another important recall.

The latter affects about 102,000 Tundra pickup trucks and Lexus LX 600 SUVs. The reason? Debris can be found inside V6 engines, a problem that arises from the manufacturing process during production.

The recall affects 2022 and 2023 models equipped with the current generation twin-turbocharged V6 engine, codenamed V35A-FTS. The recall does not affect vehicles equipped with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. In Canada, we're talking about 9,665 Tundras (2022 and 2023) and 314 LX 600 (2022) affected.

According to information provided to The Drive by Toyota, engine running debris was likely not properly cleaned from the damaged engines during the build phase, which could have contaminated the entire engine.

Without falling into an overly technical description, if the existing debris ends up sticking to certain components of the engine's internal functioning, this can cause problems such as knocking, for example, or even erratic running or failure to start the engine after stopping.

What may be more worrying is the loss of power at high speeds, which poses the risk of an accident.

If there's any good news in this recall, it's that it's not a design issue, but rather a mistake that occurred during manufacturing.

Toyota has not yet found a solution to resolve the situation. It will keep owners informed of the procedures to be followed by the end of July.
