Ukraine asks Mexico to arrest Putin if he attends Sheinbaum's inauguration

The Ukrainian embassy in Mexico called on the Mexican government on Wednesday to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin under an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court if he attends the inauguration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We trust that the Mexican government will respect the international arrest warrant” against Mr. Putin and “surrender him to the United Nations judicial body in The Hague,” the International Criminal Court, if he participates in Ms. Sheinbaum’s inauguration on Oct. 1, she said in a statement.

In March 2023, this court issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Putin, who is accused of war crimes for deporting children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.

Mexico is a signatory to the Rome Statute, the international treaty that established the International Criminal Court, which states that “every State has the duty to bring to its criminal jurisdiction those responsible for international crimes.”

The Ukrainian embassy in Mexico has called the Russian president a “war criminal” who will have to answer in court over the invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.

On the other hand, the Mexican government thanked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for inviting her to attend Ms. Sheinbaum's inauguration.

Mexico’s future foreign minister in Ms. Sheinbaum’s government, Juan Ramon, stressed on Wednesday that Mr. Putin’s invitation was a “protocol exercise.”

Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to be elected president of Mexico after her triumphant victory on June 2, will officially take office on October 1 for a six-year term.
