Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) quickly responded to a call Monday morning at Science World.
Firefighters were called to the iconic building around 8:45 a.m. on March 11 after smoke was spotted.
When they arrived, they found a small fire under the walkway next to Science World above False Creek.
VFRS spokesman Matthew Trudeau said firefighters arrived at the blaze and are still in control, but it's not completely out yet.
“We believe we have isolated the problem and [are] “Working on the final extinguishment,” he told VIA
VFRS was able to determine that it was an electrical fire. Below the walkway and above False Creek there are some electrical components.
“It's a weird spot,” Trudeau says, noting that crews have an inflatable boat and about six feet of vertical clearance during high tide.
“It's kind of where the building is, underneath the walkway area,” he says.
Fortunately, he adds, the damage to the world of science appears to have been minimal at most.
“It's hard to say,” he adds.
Science World magazine announced that it will close its doors for the day “due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Trudeau says VFRS will make sure the iconic building is OK before leaving the scene.
“We make sure everything is contained and the world of science is taken care of,” he says.
