Mathematical survey This weekend, for the first time in the history of football, a goal was rejected, and then this decision was explained in front of the match referee’s microphone during the match between Rio Ave and Braga (0-0).
On Saturday evening, on the occasion of the 25th day of the Portuguese League, former RC Linz player Simon Panza scored a wonderful goal for Braga, but his goal was rejected for offside before he executed it. So far there's nothing really new since video assistance was introduced, but there is one detail that changed everything for the overall experience, whether for players, supporters or coaches. Fabio Verissimo, the main referee in charge of the match between Rio Ave and Braga, explained via microphone to the entire stadium why Simone Panza's amazing acrobatic gesture was cancelled.
In a mixture of boos from those who disapproved, and applause from those who were convinced of the novelty, the match was resumed. This is an unprecedented innovation, and the next day Benfica was denied a penalty kick, which the match referee argued against Estoril again (3-1). The Portuguese League wants to be a precursor to this progress, which could bring good results in other competitions.
