Media in Uzbekistan reported that a powerful explosion occurred on Wednesday and Thursday night near Tashkent Airport, the capital of Uzbekistan, while authorities referred to a “fire” that led to casualties.
According to eyewitnesses, quoted by the Nova 24 news website, the incident occurred in a customs warehouse located near Tashkent Airport. Videos posted on social media show a column of smoke and flames in the night sky.
According to the Ministry of Health, a “fire” broke out at night in this warehouse in the city of Tashkent, resulting in injuries that were taken to the hospital.
“At the present time, there are no serious injuries among them. At the present time, doctors are providing all necessary medical assistance,” the Ministry of Health said via the Telegram application.
He added that emergency medical care is also being provided to those injured in the fire at the scene of the accident and in the surrounding apartments, without giving any numbers at the present time.
Uzbekistan is the largest and most populous former Soviet republic in Central Asia. As in the rest of the former Soviet Union, fires are frequent due to outdated equipment and non-compliance with safety standards.
But incidents of this magnitude remain rare.
