Former President and former First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama lit up the Democratic Convention in Chicago on Tuesday night. Here are five highlights from their powerful speeches to an already captivated audience.
“Hope is back” – Michelle Obama
“There’s something magical in the air, isn’t there? We feel it here in this square, but it’s everywhere across this country that we love. A familiar feeling that’s been buried deep for too long. You know what I’m talking about. The contagious power of hope,” Michelle Obama said.
“America, hope is back,” she added.
The hope this slogan evokes is similar to the famous poster of Barack Obama designed by an artist during the 2008 presidential campaign.
“Black Jobs” – Michelle Obama
“You see, his narrow, limited view of the world made him fear the existence of two successful, hard-working, educated black people,” Michelle Obama said.
“I want to know. Who will tell him? [à Donald Trump] That the position he is courting could be one of these “black jobs”?
She was referring to comments Trump made during his recent debate with Joe Biden. The billionaire had suggested that Biden's immigration policies were causing black Americans to lose their jobs.
“Yes she can.” – Barack Obama
“Yes, she can!”
That's what Barack Obama said to the crowd, referring of course to his old slogan.
“A strange obsession with crowd sizes” – Barack Obama
There are childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories. “This weird obsession with crowd size,” Barack Obama joked from behind the podium.
“A few days ago I heard someone compare Trump to that neighbor who runs the leaf blower by the window every minute of every day. Coming from a neighbor, it’s exhausting. Coming from a president, it’s dangerous.”
“The sequel is usually worse.” – Barack Obama
“Donald Trump wants us to believe that this country is irreparably divided. That there is an us and a them. The real Americans, who clearly support him, and the foreigners, who don’t. And he wants you to believe that you will be richer and safer if you give him the power to put people back in their place.” [de son administration] Barack Obama announced.
“We don’t need four more years of bluster, incompetence and chaos. We’ve seen this movie before and we all know that sequels are usually worse than the original. America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a new story. We are ready for President Kamala Harris,” he added to the cheering crowd.
