Wine of the Week: A delicious Portuguese red

Quinta de la Rosa, Dorosa 2020, Douro, Portugal

SAQ code: 12640232 | $21.55

If you're one of the lucky thousands who strolled the banks of the Douro River and the narrow streets of Lisbon's Bairro Alto, you may have come home with a newfound curiosity about Portuguese wine and in this week's wine you'll find a fond memory of the holiday. . Otherwise, you can still enjoy the sunny softness of this Douro red. A ray of sunshine in a bottle, let's keep it for the gray days of autumn.

Those who until now thought that Douro couldn't produce elegant wines will like Durosa even more. This entry-level red from Quinta de la Rosa is the perfect example of the region's revival. The climate generosity and tannic character of the local grape varieties are certainly there, but rather than exacerbating them, oenologist Jorge Moreira plays with subtlety and understates the extraction process. The result: red fruits with subtle flavors of ripe, but not candied, black fruits, carried by a velvety, caressing and harmonious body. At the end, there is a soft bitterness, similar to that of good dark chocolate, that makes you drool and leaves an almost salty sensation. Everything goes well at the table with braised meat dishes.
